This colossal white church is an iconic Parisian landmark. You can queue up outside to enter for free. You’ll want to admire the stained glass windows and vaulted ceilings inside. The church has areas where you can light candles in exchange for donations too. It’s one of the most atmospheric things to do in Montmartre.

You can climb the stairs to the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur viewpoint for an extra fee – emerging right at the top of its domes. Alternatively, if you want budget things to do in Montmartre, you can enjoy the views over the city for free. Just head down the Sacré-Cœur steps to its plateau along Parvis du Sacré Cœur.

2. This unusual spot rose to fame over social media as tourists shared confusing snaps.

The Sinking House is easy to find. It’s also perfectly combined with a visit to the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur. You get the illusion while walking up the steps to reach the church. Keep your eyes on your right-hand side. Then, stop on the final flight to spot a row of orange and white terraces.

This spot is easy to miss because it doesn’t appear to be sinking or abnormal in real life compared to the pictures. This is because it requires a bit of dramatic license. You just tilt your phone or camera so that the hill looks level and the terraces look to be sinking. So, it is a photographic illusion rather than the actual structure of the buildings. A fun attraction to tick off in Montmartre, it’s easy to find and free to enjoy.

3. The cobbled square is lined with traditional cafes. And Église Saint-Pierre de Montmartre church overlooks the commotion. Anything from ten to thirty artists gather in the square at a time. Amongst the sellers, tourists wander between exhibits and haggle over prices.

Some of the artwork depicts Parisian cityscapes. Other artists specialize in selling portraits of tourists. For the latter, you commission the artist to create your portrait on the spot. This is amazing for taking home a beautiful, personal souvenir.

Place du Tertre is essentially an open-air Montmartre market for the arts. It’s worth visiting to walk around and admire the artwork. Many sellers paint while waiting for sales, so it’s a chance to watch talented artists at work. It feels special that there’s still such a place for career artists in the heart of the neighborhood.

4. The restaurant was originally the property and painting studio of Ramon Pichot. Pichot was a Catalan painter and friend of Picasso. In the early 20th century, he married Germaine Gargallo. She decided to open La Maison Rose as a restaurant, painting its exterior characteristic pink. Over the years, La Maison Rose attracted everyone from Picasso to Van Gogh.

Now, you can book a table and dine inside. Or you can visit Rue de l’Abreuvoir to snap pictures of its stunning pink exterior. La Maison Rose makes Rue de l’Abreuvoir one of the prettiest streets in Paris. Visiting La Maison Rose, even to admire it from the street, is one of the best things to do in Montmartre.

6. If you visit La Maison Rose, you should carve out an extra five minutes to detour to this statue. Buste de Dalida is a bronze bust of chanteuse Dalida.

Yolanda Cristina Gigliotta’s nickname was ‘Dalida’ and she was a famous French singer. She famously recorded music in more than ten languages. She had singles in Arabic, Italian, French, Japanese, and Dutch. Egypt-born Dalida found fame after being headhunted by the film director Marco de Gastyne. The director spotted her after she won Miss Egypt.

Dalida is famous for both beauty and talent. Visiting this statue is a nod towards culture and history and only takes a few minutes. The small bust sits where Rue de l’Abreuvoir and Rue Girardon meet. It marks widespread admiration for her achievements. That said, you’ll notice that her breasts are different colors. The statue’s breasts are polished bright gold by visitors who also visit to touch them for ‘good luck’.

7. It is an eerie but worthwhile addition to your itinerary. The burial ground juts up right amidst the neighborhood’s terraces and cobbled streets. It looks pretty incongruous.

So, why should you visit a cemetery while visiting one of the most famous neighborhoods in Paris? Montmartre cemetery has the graves of renowned artists, including Nijinsky, Degas, and Zola. The cemetery opened in 1825 and has some famous tombs in its grounds. The graveyard architecture is also fascinating to see. It is a bit of a dark tourist attraction in Montmartre but a worthy stop.

Montmartre Cemetery is free to visit, which is excellent for those on a budget. We’d recommend doing some research beforehand, though. There’s little in the way of information when you arrive.

8. Moulin Rouge

If you do head to Montmartre at night, detour to Pigalle, located at the foot of the Montmartre hill. Here, you’ll find one of Paris’ most fabulous attractions: the Moulin Rouge. This elaborate cabaret has been in action since the 19th century. You can’t beat the allure of the Moulin Rouge for an evening of novelty entertainment. The Belle Epoque decor alone makes it worth visiting.

You can book tickets to evening shows to watch the dance performances. And for an extra treat, you can indulge in a fine dining experience. Tickets come with dinner or champagne choices. The Moulin Rouge is one of the most extravagant options for entertainment in Paris. It’s a bucket list experience for many.

Even if you don’t book tickets, you should admire the Moulin Rouge from the outside. The building’s exterior is fronted by neon red. It also has a lit-up windmill that creates its trademark ‘look’.

9. Musée de la Vie Romantique

Montmartre may be famous for painters. But its nearby neighborhood of Pigalle also has a grip on the artistic world. Musée de la Vie Romantique was once the house of painter Ary Scheffer. It now showcases artwork in a homely setting.

It is free to visit Musée de la Vie Romantique’s permanent collections. The ground floor plays host to George Sand’s works. It also has a range of 18th-19th century portraits and furniture. The first floor is entirely dedicated to Ary Scheffer’s paintings.

Walk through the exhibits and lap up the art history. You can head to the garden and museum’s tearoom afterward for refreshments.

10. Look for Filming Locations for Amélie

The classic French movie Amélie includes many scenes shot in Montmartre. Following the story of a shy waitress, Amélie, the movie shows her flitting around Montmartre. The movie’s premise is her committing acts of kindness to improve the lives of others. Finding filming locations for Amélie is easy. But we’ll give you a few to get you going.

Café des Deux Moulins is a must-visit spot where Amélie served as a waitress. Maison Collignon is another, which is a real-life grocery store, as seen in the movie. Finally, there’s the old windmill, Moulin de la Galette, and the gorgeous Basilique du Sacré-Cœur.

You could see these central filming locations for Amélie in about two hours. Montmartre is highly walkable, and these locations fit in perfectly.

11. Espace Dalí

Dalí is one of the Montmartre greats. This artist was a regular in the neighborhood. He was close friends with Pichot, who opened La Maison Rose. And if you are looking for things to do in Montmartre to learn more about this artist, Espace Dalí is ideal. Free to enter, this museum showcases the best of Dalí’s surrealist artwork.

While only a small museum, opt for the audio guide, and you can easily stay for an hour or two. It houses some fascinating sculptures and engravings. You’ll be face-to-face with skinny-legged elephants and horses carrying butterflies on their legs. Dalí was a talented artist, and it’s only fitting that he has been immortalized.

Even if you aren’t interested in art galleries, Espace Dalí is worth visiting. The sculptures and the novelty of his surrealist representations make it beautifully engaging.

12. Église Saint-Pierre de Montmartre

Remember Église Saint-Pierre de Montmartre, the Catholic church overlooking Place du Tertre? This 12th-century building is one of Paris’ oldest churches. It has a special place within the Catholic community. If you like grand and historic architecture, this church is one of the best things to do in Montmartre. Equally, it doesn’t attract the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur crowds, which is a pleasant experience. It has a slightly forgotten quality. It has an entrance more walked past than entered, sitting behind heavy gates.

Église Saint-Pierre de Montmartre costs nothing to enter and has a beautiful interior. Peer up at the vaulted ceilings and brightly fragmented stained glass windows. Churches are atmospheric places to sightsee, and this one is even more so.

13. Le Passe-Muraille

Le Passe-Muraille is a striking street sculpture along Place Marcel Aymé in central Montmartre. The artwork depicts a man half embedded within a brick wall. He looks partly purposeful and partly in distress. We’ll leave it up to your interpretation. He is free to visit and one of the most unusual Montmartre attractions.

The story behind Le Passe-Muraille is a useful context to have. The sculpture is based on a novel by Marcel Aymé, the namesake of its street. Marcel Aymé’s novel tells the story of Dutilleul, a man who walked through walls.

The artistic immortalization of this literary character is a surreal piece of artwork. For unusual things to do while traveling, the sculpture version of Dutilleul is ideal.

14. Spot the nicest streets

When walking through Montmartre, half of the joy of visiting is its streets. As we mentioned, the neighborhood has a village aesthetic. Some of its streets are attractions in their own right.

Which streets you walk depends on what time of day you visit. In the day, Rue des Martyrs is fun for a gentle introduction to urban life in Montmartre. It has plenty of outdoor grocery stores selling fresh fruit and vegetables. Rue Norvins is beautiful. The mostly pedestrianized street takes you past bakeries, art galleries, and souvenir shops. Watch out for the man playing the accordion with his cat. Rue Norvins is also near Rue de l’Abreuvoir. This iconic road passes La Maison Rose and is close to the Montmartre vineyard.

Finally, in the daytime, you should finish with Rue Saint-Vincent. It stretches past the vineyard and orange Au Lapin Agile bar. Rue Saint-Vincent also has stunning ivy-covered walls.

When visiting Montmartre at night, you should walk Rue des Abbesses. Late-closing bistros and dining options line the street. You should also walk the Boulevard Montmartre at night, which comes to life after hours with neon and people.

15. Shopping

Shopping is a wonderful part of visiting Paris – whether you want English bookstores or luxury fashion brands. Montmartre is a particularly beautiful place to shop. Its village aesthetic gives it a traditional atmosphere. So, where can you best soak this up with some retail therapy?

Rue des Abbesses is one of the prettiest Montmartre streets. But it’s also an incredible shopping street. The street has a rather eclectic bunch of shops. You might stop to peer in at designer sunglasses before walking forward two steps to find a window of cheese next door. That’s part of the allure.

16. Walk the Montmartre stairs

When we say the Montmartre stairs, we aren’t actually referring to a singular flight of stairs. Montmartre is famed for steep flights of stone-cut steps. Montmartre steps connect multiple levels of the neighborhood. You could follow them to hidden squares or major attractions like the Sacré-Cœur.

We recommended walking the prettiest streets in Montmartre earlier. However, if you are up for the fitness challenge, why not tackle its stairs? When it comes to the Montmartre steps, Paris doesn’t get much more of a fitness challenge. The Montmartre steps also have some of the prettiest views in the neighborhood. You’ll find graffiti, narrow streets framing distant cityscapes, and beautiful residential architecture.

Some of the best Montmartre steps to visit include the Rue Drevet stairs, Rue du Calvaire stairs, and Rue Girardon stairs. Of course, you can’t forget the Rue Foyatier, the famous steps leading to the Sacré Cœur.

17. Eat

Montmartre is known for its atmosphere and nightlife. Considering this, it makes sense that its culinary scene is so electric. Dining in Montmartre is a fantastic chance to taste Parisian cuisine and a fun activity. Montmartre’s hospitality has atmosphere and personality. Of course, it’s all good to say ‘eat’, but where are the best places to eat in Montmartre? Where should you hedge your bet for a brilliant dining experience?

La Taverne de Montmartre is a famed dining spot in Montmartre. It is just a short walk from Place du Tertre, connected to the square by the Rue du Calvaire stairs. Slightly hidden, it serves ultra-traditional French cuisine from snails to raclette and bœuf bourguignon. While a little pricey, La Taverne de Montmartre is excellent for traditional dining.

Café des Deux Moulins is another of the best places to eat in Montmartre. This restaurant was used in the film Amélie and has a pink, American diner-style interior. It’s an iconic place to choose for a meal and has a buzzy atmosphere, plus a massive picture of Amélie on its wall.

18. Élysée Montmartre

Élysée Montmartre is a big name in Paris’ music scene. The concert hall dates back to 1807, yet still hosts artists and concerts. Don’t be fooled by its ornate exterior; inside is enough space to replicate a rave warehouse.

You can check out the artist lineup on the Élysée Montmartre official website. There are as many as ten events a month, so you should be able to find one coinciding with your stay. An evening at Élysée Montmartre is guaranteed fun if you visit Montmartre at night.

19. It might just be the worst-kept secret vineyard there ever was. It’s located minutes away from La Maison Rose, and you’ll likely find it by accident. The practice of vine growing in Montmartre dates back to around 944. However, Vigne du Clos Montmartre was created in 1933 to sabotage hovering developers. As a result, the vineyard saved the green space. And this small patch of vines grows enough to harvest between 1,000 and 1,500 bottles a year.

Each October, it opens its locked gates to welcome visitors to its Harvest Festival. You can book tickets to visit Fête des Vendanges de Montmartre if you happen to be visiting in mid-October. Otherwise, just peek through the railings at one of Paris’ most momentous vineyards.

Will you tackle the Montmartre stairs or admire the Sacré-Cœur?
